Emi Ramos (they/them) is a published, queer, non-binary, Latinx photographer based in Los Angeles. They are currently a studio arts major student at Pasadena City College.
Using self-portraits as a medium, they have developed a style that is inspired by themes of identity and belonging. Emi uses their production skills to create surreal, cinematic works allowing for them to transform their appearance and express their vision via different characters. Their work has been published by the museum of americana and has been shown at the Boone Family Art Gallery.
“Growing up, I felt rejected by my environment (culture, religion, community). I developed an obsession with escaping into the hands of pop culture, immersing myself completely in fashion magazines, movies, and music. It is only in hindsight that I realize that what I was doing was desperately trying to escape my reality. My work is constantly in talk with my past; I draw inspiration from my own trauma and real-life experiences. I think that's why most of it takes place in a time that doesn't feel modern or in the present. My work is a result of past trauma, my obsession with pop culture, and growing up a queer, Latinx kid who never found their sense of belonging.”
